Washington CDL FAQs
You must earn a Washington CDL when you drive school buses, passenger vehicles that transport more than 16 people (including driver), commercial vehicles that exceed a gross weight of 26,000 pounds, or carrying hazardous materials in an amount that must be placarded.
Before applying for a Washington CDL, you need to meet a few requirements. You need to possess a Washington driver’s license and have a clean driving record that means your current driver’s license does not have any suspensions, revocation, or cancellations. In addition, you must provide proof of your identities such as Washington residency, U.S citizenship, or lawful persistent resident. You also are required to show your Medical Examiner’s Certification.
You must be sufficient of 18 years old to drive a commercial vehicle within Washington’s borders (intrastate), or at least 21 years of age to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines (interstate), transport passengers, or haul hazardous materials.
To get a Washington commercial driver’s license, you must pass all the Washington examinations that include a CDL general knowledge test and a CDL skills test. However, you must first pass the CDL knowledge and vision tests to get a Washington Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before you are allowed to take the CDL road skills test.
The CDL skills test is a portion of the Washington CDL exam that consists of three parts: a pre-trip inspection, a basic control skills test, and an on-road skill test. The pre-trip inspection part aims to test your ability to perform a commercial vehicle check. The basic control skill test involves alley dock backing, offset right or left backing, and straight light backing. The on-road skill part requires you to perform your skills in normal traffic situations, and this part is conducted on the street.
Washington CDL general knowledge test consists of 50 multiple choice questions, of which you must get an 80% passing score. The test covers some topics like traffic laws, emergency preparedness, solutions for vehicle or road problems, and vehicle operations in normal and special conditions.
The standard Washington commercial driver’s license costs $102. The CDL knowledge test costs $10 and the CDL skills test costs $100. You have to pay $10 for each endorsement added to a Washington CDL.
You have to renew your Washington CDL license after every six years, and the fee for CDL renewal is $54.
On average, it takes about seven weeks to get your Washington commercial driver’s license (CDL) when attending a full-time driver training program.
