You are required to obtain a Utah commercial driver’s license (CDL) if you operate school buses, passenger vehicles transporting more than 16 people (including drivers), commercial vehicles that exceed a gross weight of 26,000 pounds, or hauling hazardous materials in amounts requiring placarding. 

How do I get my CDL in Utah?

To obtain a CDL in Utah, you must pass the Utah CDL exam that consists of two tests, a CDL knowledge test, and a CDL road skills test. However, you must pass the knowledge test first to receive a Utah Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), then you can take the road skills test.

At what age can I get my CDL in Utah?

Once you are 18 years old, you will be permitted to drive a commercial vehicle within Utah borders. And, when you are 21 years of age, you can drive a commercial vehicle between state lines, carrying hazardous materials or transporting people.

How many questions are on the Utah CDL permit test?

There are a total of 50 questions on the Utah CDL written test, of which you have to correctly answer at least 40 questions to pass this test.  It covers some topics like driving safety, transporting cargo, general trucking knowledge, and how to perform a pre-trip inspection. Once you pass this written test, you will receive a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) that lasts for 6 months.

After applicants pass the CDL general knowledge test, they must successfully complete the CDL road skills test that includes three parts: a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control, and a road test.

When visiting the DMV to renew your CDL license, remember to bring the following documents: proof of identity and verification of citizenship or lawful status, social security verification, proof of Utah residency and mailing address, DOT card and CDL medical self-certification form, and fees associated with the renewal of your CDL.
