In most cases, endorsements of driver’s license are often used for the purpose of granting additional driving privileges without the need of getting other types of endorsements. Currently, the state of Virginia only allows 3 Virginia CDL endorsements on the license of a commercial driver. Although Virginia CDL endorsements are not a compulsory necessity for all drivers, an endorsement absolutely has the ability to extend your career as a commercial driver.

Additionally, since most of Virginia’s driver licenses are only applicable to commercial driver licenses, drivers who currently hold regular class C licenses won’t be able to use them.

However, there may be some exceptions such as a motorcycle endorsement that can be added to any regular driver’s license.

Virginia CDL classifications

Basically, there are 3 classifications of Commercial Driver’s License – Class A, Class B, and Class C. The class of your vehicle will typically depend on the type of vehicle you have, its gross vehicle weight rating, and the manufacturer’s design.

Vehicles under this class that is used to transport hazardous materials also known as HazMat need to secure a Class C Commercial Driver’s License. In general, drivers that have a Class C Commercial Driver’s License are required to only transport 16 passengers, counting the driver himself.

A Class C CDL is the most common type of driver’s license that allows drivers to operate vehicles that contain less than 24 passengers. If you hold a Class C license and you have the correct endorsements, you can basically drive and operate other commercial vehicles listed below.

What is X Endorsement?

While getting your Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license, you can also get yourself an endorsement. An endorsement gives you permission to drive a particular type of vehicle. It can be thought of as “additional permission”. The process of getting endorsements varies between states. Six various endorsements may be issued with your CDL, but this study guide is going to revolve around just one kind of endorsement, the X endorsement.

The X endorsement is also referred to as the Tanker/HAZMAT Combo endorsement. It is a mix of endorsements that is primarily for tankers and other vehicles that carry hazardous materials. This makes sense since tankers are predominantly used to transport and carry hazardous materials. However, the road to getting your X endorsement is not fast and easy. You need to complete some knowledge and skill assessments.

The following rules must be followed for you to qualify for the X endorsement:

You must be at least 18 years old.
You must have legal residency in the United States or a valid US passport.
You must first have a valid CDL.
Your CDL and the endorsement you’re applying for should be from the same state.
You must pass the vision test.
You should bring with you important records such as proof of legal presence, birthplace, birthday, Social Security Number, and so on.
If it’s your first time applying for it, fill out the application forms and register for the written exam.

Which endorsement should I get: N or X Endorsement

If you are an aspiring tank vehicle driver, you should get either the N or X endorsement. To determine which endorsement you should get, consider the materials that you will transport. Is it hazardous and flammable or just liquid? If the content of your tanker is harmless, you should go for the N endorsement. Otherwise, you should apply for the X endorsement.

What type of CDL do you need for an X endorsement?

The type of CDL that you will need for an X endorsement is a Class A CDL since this type of CDL can be used to operate a weight of 26,001 pounds or more for a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). This type of CMV is manufactured to transport hazardous materials or products or to transport more than 16 passengers. The Class A CDL would confer on the driver to operate a CMV that has a tractor weight of more than 26,001 pounds and trailer(s) weight of more than 10,000 pounds thus very appropriate for carrying tons of heavy hazardous wastes.

What tests do you need to take X endorsement?

You have to pay, take and pass your Tanker Endorsement Knowledge Test as well as your Hazmat Knowledge Test. In addition to that, you need to pass a TSA Background Check. This is required for the approval of your X endorsement. On average, it takes about two to six weeks for the background check to be finished.

Also, you will be required to submit your fingerprints and show two identification cards namely; your driver’s license and your DOT medical card.

How many questions are on the X endorsement Exam?

To get the X endorsement on your CDL, you need to pass the CDL Tank & HAZMAT Knowledge test. The test covers the CDL manual’s Section 8 for Tank Vehicles and Section 9 for Hazardous Materials. It is composed of two knowledge tests, one for tank vehicles and one for hazardous materials. You are to answer 20 questions about tankers and 30 questions about hazardous materials. You need to score 80% on each knowledge test to pass. The test will be in the form of multiple choices and true or false.

To pass each of these tests, you must show that you have a thorough knowledge of hazardous material transportation and the safe operation of a commercial tanker. If you are a CDL driver who wishes to drive tank vehicles and transport hazardous materials, this is one of the things you would have to face.

How much is the Hazmat endorsement?

The overall cost to get a CDL Hazmat endorsement is approximately $100. The TSA screening costs $86.50, and some states may require some extra fees to take the test and update your CDL-A license. If you’re driving more than 2,500 miles per week, you’ll make that back in 2-4 weeks. That depends on how much of a bump in pay you get.

How many times can you fail the CDL X Endorsement?

So what happens if you fail? As much as you want to ensure success on the tests, there’s a chance that you might fail. If you fail the first time, you cannot retake the tests within three days from the day you took them. In a year, you can only take it six times. If you still fail on your sixth try, you won’t be able to take the seventh until twelve months have passed after you failed the first. This policy is one of the reasons why it’s important to prepare for the tests.

The process to obtain CDL with X endorsement

Step 1: Apply CDL at the DMV

Schedule a skill test appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Wednesday excluding holidays.
Bring the type of vehicle(s) for the class you will drive.
You need to pass the skills test. This covers road tests, basic control skills tests, and vehicle inspection. Failing any part of the skills test means postponement of another testing. You are only given 3 tries to pass the skills test. Payment of a retest fee is required each time you retake the skills test.

The skills test requirement may be waived for the following instances;

You have a current valid CDL from another state or your CDL has been expired for less than 2 years. You will have to surrender that license or (proof thereof).

Be sure the license should have the equivalent classification, endorsements, and restrictions to the one you are applying for.
Submit a completed Commercial Military Waiver (DL 965) (PDF) if you have military driving experience.

You need to visit a DMV Commercial Driving Test office so your application could be finalized. Your application may expire if you fail to return to a DMV commercial office.

Tennessee CDL Classifications

Any driver holding a Class B license as long as supplemented by appropriate endorsements can be allowed to operate Class C and D vehicles. Drivers may operate box trucks (such as appliance & furniture delivery services and couriers), straight trucks, dump trucks, and buses (city buses, tourist buses, and school buses).
Class C License – holders that are neither Class A nor Class B but are designed to transport at least a minimum of 16 passengers inclusive of the driver or used to transport hazardous materials as stated in the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act.
Class D License – holders that only transport private passengers

CDL Requirements in Tennessee

When applying for the Tennessee CDL test, applicants must be of 18 years of age to be allowed to drive within Texas and at least 21 years of age to either transport hazardous materials or drive interstate.

Just like any other state, review the respective state’s Tennessee CDL requirement first. To qualify for the Commercial Instruction Permit, applicants must have a valid DOT medical card, which is also the same if you are a government employee before they will be granted to participate in the test and proceed with the CDL application process. In efforts of ensuring the safety of their constituents, Missouri along with several states of America conform to the Federal Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 that established a uniform and systematic process of classifying, testing, and licensing drivers of commercial motor vehicles.

Missouri has always been stern in the implementation of the law. The state mandates all drivers and operators of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) to undergo and pass the commercial driver’s license (CDL) examination. Their government also added a set of special provisions alongside stricter penalties for violators and offenders. Missouri CDL Endorsement and Classification

Missouri requires all drivers of vehicles categorized as CMV to acquire CDL. A vehicle is considered a commercial motor vehicle if it meets any of the following criteria:

A single-vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) equivalent to 26001 pounds or more
A combination of vehicles with a total GVWR rating equivalent to 26001 pounds or more assuming that the towed vehicle weighs more than 10000 pounds.
A vehicle designed to carry and transport 16 or more people including the driver himself
A vehicle designed to carry and transport a huge amount of hazardous material that is classified as either select agent or toxin in the 42 CFR part 73

There are three classifications of CDL in Missouri – Class A, Class B, and Class C. Applicants must identify the type of their CMV and to what CDL classification it belongs to. Here’s a guide on how you can determine yours correctly:

Class A CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate a compound vehicle with a combined GVWR rating equals 26001 pounds or more given that the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10000 pounds. Class A CDL holders are also legally allowed to operate CMVs categorized under Class B and C.

Class B CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate a single or compound vehicle with a GVWR rating of more than 26001 pounds. However, the towed vehicle’s weight must never exceed 10000 pounds. Class B CDL holders are also legally allowed to operate CMVs categorized under Class C.

Class C CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate CMVs that weigh less than 260001 pounds and that are designed either to transport 16 or more passengers or to transport hazardous materials. Class C CDL holders are not entitled to drive CMVs with higher classification (A and B).

On top of correct CDL classification, a commercial driver must also get the required Missouri CDL endorsements.

Missouri CDL endorsements provide additional driving privileges. But at the same time, it also entails more responsibility for the holder. The following are specific circumstances that require Missouri CDL endorsements:

H Endorsement – Permits drivers to operate CMVs carrying and transporting hazardous materials.

Missouri CDL Endorsement knowledge test

To qualify as an eligible commercial driver in Missouri, an individual must pass both Knowledge Test and Skills Test. The examination results must be supplemented by a “Certified” medical status from a medical practitioner.

The knowledge test is a written exam composed of a general test and several other tests specified for every applicable Missouri CDL endorsement. To pass each test, the applicant must answer at least 80% of the total items correctly.

General Knowledge Test – Drivers applying for a CDL regardless of classification are required to take this test.
Passenger Transport Test – Drivers applying for a P endorsement are required to take this test. Bus drivers are the most common takers of this exam.
Hazardous Materials Test – Drivers applying for an H endorsement are required to take this test. On top of this, the Missouri state also performs strenuous background and federal criminal history checks on the applicants.
Double/ Triples Test – Drivers who aim to operate double/triple trailers must take this test.
Tank Vehicle Test – Drivers who aim to operate tank vehicles with more than 1000 gal. capacity must take this test.

3 Endorsement are allowed on the Missouri CLP

CDL classes in Michigan

For CDL Michigan, drivers who operate vehicles that suit any of the following criteria must apply for a commercial driver’s license:

On top of a correct CDL classification, the drivers must supplement their license with the appropriate endorsement. There are 6 endorsements followed in Michigan:

Michigan CDL Knowledge Test

All new applicants must submit all the required documents to Michigan’s local Secretary of State office. Only then they will be allowed to take the appropriate knowledge tests and skills tests.

CDL knowledge test is a set of written exams that assess the mastery of the applicant on the 20 facets of commercial driving mandated by US Federal Law. Applying for endorsement also entails additional written exams. An applicant must garner at least 80% correct answers to pass.

Michigan CDL Age Requirement

Only applicants aged 21 years old and above will be considered eligible for commercial driving interstate. Unlike most situations, the ability to operate larger commercial vehicles can only be granted to those who can pass the CDL exam. Illinois CDL Classifications

Class B License – holders can drive single or combination vehicles with a GCWR of 26,000 pounds or more and with a towing capacity not exceeding a GVWR of 10,000 pounds. Any driver holding a Class B license as long as supplemented by appropriate endorsements can be allowed to operate Class C and D vehicles. Drivers may operate box trucks (such as appliance & furniture delivery services and couriers), straight trucks, dump trucks, and buses (city buses, tourist buses, and school buses).
Class C License – holders that are neither Class A nor Class B but are designed to transport at least a minimum of 16 passengers inclusive of the driver or used to transport hazardous materials as stated in the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act.
Class D License – holders that only transport private passengers.

Illinois CDL License Restrictions

Aside from the additional privileges granted alongside these license endorsements, the Illinois CDL restrictions are used to prevent drivers from operating under conditions such as driving both an automatic transmission vehicle and a regular manual geared vehicle. Illinois CDL Requirements and Qualifications
