You must obtain a Rhode Island commercial driver’s license (CDL) when you operate school buses, passenger vehicles transporting more than 16 people (including driver), or commercial vehicles that exceed a gross weight of 26,000 pounds or haul hazardous materials.
You are required to be at least 18 years of age to drive a commercial vehicle within Rhode Island’s borders (intrastate), or you must be at least 21 years old to be allowed to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines (interstate), carry hazardous materials, or transport any passengers.
To obtain a CDL license in Rhode Island, you must pass all tests of the CDL exam including a CDL knowledge test and a CDL road skills test. However, you must pass the CDL knowledge test first to get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), then you will be allowed to take the road skills test.
Before applying for a CDL license, you need to meet a few conditions. Firstly, you must already hold a valid operator’s license for at least two years. In addition, you need to submit a medical certification and provide proof of your identity as a Rhode Island residency, U.S citizenship, or lawful persistent resident.
The Rhode Island CDL general knowledge test has 50 multiple-choice questions, of which you have to correctly answer at least 40 questions (80%) to pass the test. These questions cover the topic of local and federal laws, and contents from the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles Commercial Driver License Manual.
The Rhode Island CDL skills test consists of three parts: a pre-trip inspection, a basic vehicle control, and an on-road skill test. In this test, drivers are required to demonstrate some skills such as lane changes, stop/start, turns, and intersections which they have to deal with in normal traffic situations.
The application fee is $11.50. You have to pay $26.50 for a Chauffeur License, $33.50 for license renewal 70 and older (2 years), $81.50 for license renewal (5 years). Permit new or renewal costs $41.50. Each test cost $10.
If you hold a Commercial Learner’s Permit in Rhode Island, you can drive, but under the supervision of a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old with a minimum of 5 years of driving experience seats next to you at all times.
