If you spot a hazard ahead, what should you do first?

A Make a contingency plan.

A hazard is a road user or road condition that presents a possible danger. A hazard is not an emergency – but it can become one. When you spot a hazard, think about the emergencies that could develop and formulate plans (such as evasive action or braking) to deal with them. Be ready to carry out those plans if necessary. It's all part of being a safe, defensive driver.
