The state mandates all drivers and operators of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) to undergo and pass the commercial driver’s license (CDL) examination. Missouri CDL Endorsement and Classification

Missouri requires all drivers of vehicles categorized as CMV to acquire CDL. A vehicle is considered a commercial motor vehicle if it meets any of the following criteria:

• A single-vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) equivalent to 26001 pounds or more
• A combination of vehicles with a total GVWR rating equivalent to 26001 pounds or more assuming that the towed vehicle weighs more than 10000 pounds.
• A vehicle designed to carry and transport 16 or more people including the driver himself
• A vehicle designed to carry and transport a huge amount of hazardous material that is classified as either select agent or toxin in the 42 CFR part 73

There are three classifications of CDL in Missouri – Class A, Class B, and Class C.  Applicants must identify the type of their CMV and to what CDL classification it belongs to. Here’s a guide on how you can determine yours correctly:

Class A CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate a compound vehicle with a combined GVWR rating equals 26001 pounds or more given that the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10000 pounds. Class A CDL holders are also legally allowed to operate CMVs categorized under Class B and C.

Class B CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate a single or compound vehicle with a GVWR rating of more than 26001 pounds. However, the towed vehicle’s weight must never exceed 10000 pounds. Class B CDL holders are also legally allowed to operate CMVs categorized under Class C.

Class C CDL – Grants drivers permit to operate CMVs that weigh less than 260001 pounds and that are designed either to transport 16 or more passengers or to transport hazardous materials. Class C CDL holders are not entitled to drive CMVs with higher classification (A and B).

On top of correct CDL classification, a commercial driver must also get the required Missouri CDL endorsements.

Missouri CDL endorsements provide additional driving privileges. But at the same time, it also entails more responsibility for the holder. The following are specific circumstances that require Missouri CDL endorsements:

H Endorsement – Permits drivers to operate CMVs carrying and transporting hazardous materials.

N Endorsement – Permit drivers to operate CMVs categorized as “tank vehicles” and can hold 1000 gallons or more of either liquid or gas material.

P Endorsement – Permit drivers to operate CMVs purposed to carry and transport 16 or more passengers including the driver himself.

S Endorsement – Permit drivers to operate CMVs categorized as “school bus”

T Endorsement – Permit drivers to operate and pull long CVs such as double trailers, triple trailers, and 5-axles semi.

X Endorsement – Permit drivers to operate CMVs classified as tank vehicle and that carries hazardous materials.

 

Missouri CDL Endorsement knowledge test

To qualify as an eligible commercial driver in Missouri, an individual must pass both Knowledge Test and Skills Test. The examination results must be supplemented by a “Certified” medical status from a medical practitioner.

The knowledge test is a written exam composed of a general test and several other tests specified for every applicable Missouri CDL endorsement. To pass each test, the applicant must answer at least 80% of the total items correctly.

• General Knowledge Test – Drivers applying for a CDL regardless of classification are required to take this test.
• Passenger Transport Test – Drivers applying for a P endorsement are required to take this test. Bus drivers are the most common takers of this exam.
• Hazardous Materials Test – Drivers applying for an H endorsement are required to take this test. On top of this, the Missouri state also performs strenuous background and federal criminal history checks on the applicants.
• Double/ Triples Test – Drivers who aim to operate double/triple trailers must take this test.
• Tank Vehicle Test – Drivers who aim to operate tank vehicles with more than 1000 gal. capacity must take this test.
• Combination Vehicle Test – Drivers who aim to operate combination vehicles must take the exam.
• Schools Bus Test – Drivers who will operate school buses are required to take this test.

3 Endorsement are allowed on the Missouri CLP

Before applying for a CDL, drivers must first acquire a commercial learning permit or CLP. This authorizes drivers to practice operating target CMV on public roads given that they are accompanied by a CDL holder.
