Typically, there are 3 basic Florida CDL endorsements that are required for a Commercial Learner’s Permit. These are Florida CDL endorsements P, S, and N endorsements.

P – Passenger Vehicle Endorsement

A Florida license holder with a “P” endorsement is not allowed to drive specified vehicles that are intended to carry and transport passengers. The only individuals allowed would only be federal auditors, state inspectors, test examiners.

S – School Bus Endorsement

A Florida license holder that has an “S” endorsement is not allowed to drive and operate a school bus that carries and transports its passengers. The only individuals allowed would only be federal auditors, state inspectors, test examiners.

N – Tank Vehicle Endorsement

A Florida license holder that has an “N” endorsement is only allowed to drive and operate an empty tank vehicle. Thus, it is prohibited from driving any tank vehicle that has previously confined HazMats (hazardous materials) or contaminated tanks.

Florida CDL Permit Test

After obtaining your very own commercial driver’s license, you may need to take license endorsements eventually to operate other certain types of vehicles. 

Florida CDL endorsements serve as special permission to more comprehensive access to other vehicles. But before you can have them, you must assure that you can complete the basic requirement which is a specific written test.

Most of the time, the written knowledge test comprises of a 20 item multiple-choice or true or false – in which you must pass at least 80% of it (equivalent to 16 items). However, for more difficult Florida CDL endorsements, the test items may vary.

• Class A CDL – for this class, the standard item number is 70 questions. This comprised of 50 items general knowledge test and 20 item combination vehicles skill test.
• Class B CDL – for this class, the standard item number is 50 questions with skill tests required.
• Class C CDL – for this class, the standard item number is 50 questions with skill tests required for specific vehicles such as buses and air-braked vehicles.
• Passenger Vehicle Endorsement – for this type, the standard item number is 20 questions with skill tests required for buses.
• School Bus Endorsement – for this type, the standard item number is 25 questions with skill tests required for school buses.
• Double and Triple Trailers Endorsement – for this type, the standard item number is 20 questions that do not require any additional skill tests.
• Tank Vehicle Endorsement – for this type, the standard item number is 20 questions that do not require any additional skill tests.
• Hazardous Materials Endorsement – for this type, the standard item number is 30 questions that do not require any additional skill tests.
• Air Brake Restriction Removal – for this type, the standard item number is 25 questions with skill tests required for vehicles with air brakes.

Together with Florida CDL Permit Test, you would be required for proper documentation, be able to pass the background check (which could include fingerprinting at an approved location), and pay for the compulsory fees.

Medical Self- Certification Requirements

All drivers who hold commercial licenses must have a copy of their Medical Examiner’s Certificate-based under the federal rules. Also known as Medical Card Self-Certification, it helps ensure that drivers are safe and that they pass all the needed physical requirements that are issued by FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

With this authentication System, license holders can conveniently meet the new requirements without going to the driver’s license office.

This report is termed self-certification since the applicant alone will decide on which certification class his or her personal driving information falls.

All drivers who wish to have or who have a commercial driver’s license that is subject to the upgrade, transfer, or renewal are also required to have a self-certification.

Basically, there are four types of certification.

• Interstate Non-Excepted – designated to operate in interstate commerce. Aside from meeting the requirements from the 49 CFR part 391 for you to obtain a medical examiner’s certificate.
• Interstate Excepted – designated to operate for interstate commerce. It does not need to meet the requirements of a Federal DOT medical card (Department of Transportation).
• Non-Excepted Intrastate – designated in the intrastate commerce only. It is a necessity for you to meet the requirements for driver qualification to get a medical certification.
• Excepted Intrastate – designated in the intrastate commerce and you do not need to obtain the requirements for DOT’s medical card.

CDL Florida Testing (Location and Time to Test)

Everyone in Florida that applies for a Commercial Driver’s License must be able to complete and pass the specified written knowledge test regardless of the license class you are applying for.
