DC DMV offers a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to professional drivers who live in the District. The DC DMV CDL is a credential that complies with federal identification guidelines and is used as a federal-level ID. It is valid for eight years and can be renewed.
A Class D license permits a person to operate any single vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 lbs or less or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a GVWR, not more than 10,000 lbs (must be at least 18 years of age or under farm exemption if combined weight exceeds 26,000 pounds).
To get a DC license, you will be required:
Proof of identity and age - must be at least 16 years old.
Bring two documents that prove you are resident in the District.
Proof of Social Security number.
If you are 16 or 17 years old, proof of parental approval.
According to the DC website information, a DC Resident is an individual that maintains a place of abode within DC for 183 days or more. At any time if the individual is domiciled in the state, you are considered to be a DC resident. A DC Non-resident is an individual who did not spend any time domiciled in the state.
